India has over 42,000 colleges and universities, of which approximately 40,000 are private institutions. Most private universities do not require national or state entrance exams for undergraduate admission. Entrance exams like JEE Main (engineering), NEET (medical), CLAT (law), and CUET (Central Universities) are mandatory only for specific categories of institutions — IITs/NITs, government medical colleges, National Law Universities, and Central Universities respectively.
