NEET Eligibility Criteria 2026
You must meet ALL of these criteria to appear in NEET UG 2026.
Nationality
Indian citizens, NRIs, OCIs, PIOs, and foreign nationals are eligible. NRI/OCI candidates apply under NRI quota with different fee structures.
Age Requirement
Minimum 17 years as on December 31, 2026. No upper age limit (Supreme Court ruling). Age is calculated from date of birth as per Class 10 certificate.
Class 12 Subjects
Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany + Zoology) as compulsory subjects. English as an additional subject. Must have studied Biology/Biotechnology.
Class 12 Minimum Marks
General: 50% aggregate in PCB. SC/ST/OBC: 40% aggregate in PCB. PwD (General): 45% aggregate in PCB. Class 12 appearing students can also apply.
Attempts
No restriction on number of NEET attempts (Supreme Court ruling, 2018). You can appear every year until you secure admission or choose to stop.
MBBS Seat Eligibility
For MBBS: NMC-recognized medical degree. Minimum 50th percentile in NEET for General (50th) / SC-ST-OBC (40th). Must qualify the NEET cut-off for the specific college and category.
NEET Counselling 2026 — How It Works
NEET counselling is a multi-round, merit-based seat allotment process. There are two parallel tracks: MCC (All India Quota) and State Quota counselling.
MCC Counselling (All India Quota)
- 15% All India Quota seats in all government medical colleges
- 100% seats in AIIMS, JIPMER, AFMC, and other central institutions
- 100% seats in all deemed universities and central universities
- Register at mcc.nic.in — separate from state process
- No state domicile required for AIQ seats
- 4 rounds: Round 1 → Round 2 → Mop-up → Stray Vacancy
State Quota Counselling
- 85% seats in government medical colleges go to State Quota
- Conducted separately by each state authority
- Requires state domicile certificate (usually)
- Separate registration, fees, and choice filling per state

Step-by-Step NEET Counselling Process
Register on mcc.nic.in
Create an account, fill personal details, upload documents, and pay the registration fee (Rs. 1,000 for General, Rs. 500 for SC/ST/PwD). Do this the moment the window opens.
Fill & Lock Your Choice List
Search for colleges and courses, add them to your preference list, and arrange them in your priority order. You can add up to 100+ choices. Review carefully before locking — the order is permanent.
Seat Allotment
MCC runs an algorithm matching NEET rank, preferences, category, and seat availability. Result is published on the MCC portal — you either get a seat or remain waitlisted.
Accept Seat & Pay Security Deposit
If allotted a seat, you must accept it and pay the security deposit (Rs. 10,000 for govt, Rs. 2 lakh for deemed) within 24-48 hours. Missing this deadline cancels your allotment.
Choose Freeze / Float / Slide
Decide whether to freeze (stop here), float (try for upgrade in next round while keeping current seat), or slide (upgrade within same college). Float is recommended in early rounds.
Report to the Allotted College
After final allotment, report to the college with all original documents within the reporting window. Failure to report means forfeiture of seat and security deposit.

Pro tip: Get 10 attested photocopies of every document before Round 1 starts. Colleges often ask for multiple copies at reporting and administrative offices. Running around for attested copies after seat allotment is avoidable stress.
8 Common Mistakes in NEET Counselling 2026
Not registering for MCC counselling separately
Qualifying NEET does NOT auto-register you for counselling. You must register on mcc.nic.in within the specified window — missing it means missing all AIQ and deemed seats.
Choosing "Freeze" too early
Freezing your seat in Round 1 means no upgrade in later rounds. Float is almost always the better option — you keep your current seat while trying for a better one.
Skipping state counselling registration
MCC and state counselling are separate processes with separate registration, fees, and choice filling. You should register for both simultaneously where eligible.
Wrong category certificate
OBC certificate issued after April 1 of the previous financial year or without the "Non-Creamy Layer" clause will be rejected. Get a fresh one from the appropriate authority before counselling starts.
Filling choices without strategy
Most students fill 50–100 choices randomly. The order matters — your first choice gets priority. Research fees, hospital strength, PG results, and location before filling.
Missing the security deposit deadline
After seat allotment you must pay the security deposit within a tight window (typically 24–48 hours). Missing it means your allotment is cancelled and you cannot participate further.
Not verifying domicile eligibility
State quota requires state domicile. Many students apply to states they are not domiciled in and get rejected at reporting. Verify eligibility before including state quota choices.
Ignoring Mop-up and Stray Vacancy rounds
Many good government seats remain unfilled until Mop-up and Stray Vacancy rounds. Students who accept a seat early miss upgrade opportunities in these final rounds.

Registration windows are short and concurrent. Set calendar reminders for both. Missing registration is the single most avoidable mistake.
Build your choice list in preference order — not alphabetically
Your true first preference should be at position 1. Research government college hospital patient load, PG passage rates, and hostel quality before filling 100+ choices.
Always choose Float over Freeze in Rounds 1 and 2
Float lets you upgrade to a better college in the next round while holding your current seat. Only Freeze in the final round when you are happy with your allotment.
Keep all documents attested and ready before counselling starts
Document verification happens at reporting — missing or incorrect documents means cancellation. Get 8–10 attested photocopies of everything before Round 1 starts.
Research your state-specific counselling rules thoroughly
Each state has different domicile rules, NRI quota percentages, management quota processes, and security deposit amounts. Do not assume all states work the same.
Apply for EWS or OBC scholarship before the round ends
Scholarship applications for fee reimbursement have separate deadlines. Many students get fee waivers they never applied for. Check your state scholarship portal.
Track seat matrix changes after each round
Seat matrices update after every round as students upgrade, withdraw, or join. A college that seemed full in Round 1 may have seats in Round 2.
