What to Avoid

3 Mistakes Parents Make With Career Decisions

01

Forcing Career by Prestige

Impact: Child performs poorly in a career they did not choose

Fix: A counsellor confirms whether the child's aptitude fits the goal — separating prestige from fit.

02

Ignoring New-Age Careers

Impact: Missing out on better-suited, high-growth career options

Fix: Our counsellors cover emerging careers (Data Science, UX Design, Cybersecurity, Sports Management) with real salary data.

03

Late Career Counselling

Impact: Critical decisions — stream, exam, college — made under deadline pressure

Fix: Book before Class 9 result or Class 12 board results for the best outcomes.

FAQ

Common Questions from Parents

What is career counselling for parents?+

Career counselling for parents is a specialised guidance session that helps parents understand the right career direction for their child — based on aptitude, interest, and current academic performance. At College For Me, parents can join the counselling session along with their child, or attend a separate session for their own questions. Every session is free (Rs. 0).

How do I help my child choose between Science, Commerce, and Arts?+

Stream selection should be based on three factors: your child's aptitude (which subjects they perform best in), their interest (which careers excite them), and their long-term career goal. Our counsellors run a structured aptitude and interest assessment in the first 15 minutes of the session to give you a data-backed stream recommendation — not a guess based on marks alone.

My child wants to pursue a career I am not sure about. What should I do?+

This is the most common reason parents contact us. Our counsellors run a mediated session that includes both parent and child, presenting career data (salary, job availability, growth trajectory) for the career your child wants — alongside alternatives. The goal is an evidence-based decision that both parent and child agree on. Most parents find this more effective than persuasion alone.

Is career counselling for my child free at College For Me?+

Yes — completely free. Every session at College For Me is Rs. 0, for both parent-only sessions and joint parent + child sessions. Our counsellors are salaried professionals with no commission from any college, coaching center, or course provider.

When should parents book career counselling for their child?+

The best timing depends on your child's class: book before Class 10 board results for stream selection guidance; book in Class 11 to lock in entrance exam strategy; book immediately after JEE/NEET/CLAT results for college shortlisting and admission round strategy. The earlier you book, the more options your counsellor can work with.
