About IIT Jammu: Indian Institute of Technology
IIT Jammu: Admission, Courses, Fees, Cutoff & Placements
Indian Institute of Technology Jammu, popularly called IIT Jammu, is an Institute of National Importance located at Jagti, NH-44, Nagrota, in Jammu and Kashmir. Established in 2016, it belongs to the third generation of IITs and has grown quickly in academics, research, and infrastructure. Its academic work now runs from a permanent campus of about 400 acres, surrounded by hills and clean mountain air. The institute offers B.Tech, M.Tech, M.Sc, and Ph.D. programmes, and students get a curriculum that follows the same modern IIT framework, with open electives, minors, and strong research exposure. For students who want an IIT degree and are open to studying in a calmer, less crowded environment, IIT Jammu is a serious and rewarding option.
IIT Jammu Courses Offered
IIT Jammu offers 23 programmes across undergraduate, postgraduate, and research levels. In B.Tech, the popular choices include Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, and Mathematics and Computing. At the postgraduate level, the institute runs M.Tech programmes in specialised areas such as Tunnel Engineering, Mechanical System Design, Computer Science and Engineering, and Medical Devices under Biosciences and Bioengineering, along with M.Sc programmes such as Physics. These specialised M.Tech options are a real strength, because they connect directly to growing sectors like infrastructure, healthcare technology, and advanced manufacturing. Students who want a research career can also pursue a Ph.D. in engineering, science, and humanities disciplines.
IIT Jammu Fees
The fee at IIT Jammu depends on the programme. For B.Tech, the tuition fee is about ₹2 lakh per year, which comes to around ₹8 lakh over four years, and this is in addition to a one-time registration fee of about ₹15,000 and a small yearly examination fee. M.Tech programmes are much cheaper, with a total fee of around ₹93,300, and the M.Sc Physics programme costs about ₹40,000 in total. Hostel accommodation on campus costs around ₹35,000 per year. What makes IIT Jammu affordable for many families is the strong fee waiver system. SC, ST, and PwD students receive a 100% tuition fee waiver. General and OBC students whose family income is below ₹1 lakh get a full waiver, and those with family income between ₹1 lakh and ₹5 lakh get a two-thirds waiver. Students can also apply for education loans through the Vidya Lakshmi portal using their JoSAA seat allotment letter. Always check the official fee sheet on the IIT Jammu website before payment, because amounts can change every year.
IIT Jammu Admission Process 2026
Admission to the B.Tech programmes at IIT Jammu is based on JEE Advanced, followed by JoSAA counselling. To appear in JEE Advanced, a candidate must first rank among the top 2.5 lakh qualifiers of JEE Main, and a minimum of 75% marks in Class 12 (or being in the top 20 percentile of the board) is generally required as per the official rules. After the JEE Advanced result, candidates register on the JoSAA portal, fill in their choices of institute and branch, and are allotted a seat according to their rank, category, and the preferences they have given. The process runs through multiple rounds, so students can freeze, float, or slide their seat depending on what they want. For M.Tech admissions, the entry route is GATE through the COAP or institute-level process. Since dates and eligibility rules change every year, candidates should follow the official IIT Jammu and JoSAA notifications for the latest schedule.
IIT Jammu Cutoff
IIT Jammu cutoff is decided by JEE Advanced and JoSAA, and it changes with the branch, category, quota, gender, and counselling round. Computer Science and Engineering is the most competitive branch and consistently closes at the lowest ranks, followed by Mathematics and Computing and Electrical Engineering. Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, and Materials Engineering generally close at higher ranks, which gives students with a moderate rank a realistic chance of getting an IIT seat. The cutoff list on this page shows opening and closing ranks round-wise for the 2026 counselling, and students can filter it by category, quota, and gender to see exactly where their rank stands. A smart way to use cutoffs is to treat last year's closing rank as a guide, not a guarantee, and keep a safe branch in your preference list, because ranks can move by a few hundred places in either direction from one year to the next.
IIT Jammu Placements
Placements at IIT Jammu have improved steadily as more batches graduate. The institute reports an 85% placement rate, an average package of ₹17 LPA, a median package of ₹15 LPA, and a highest package of ₹53 LPA. The fact that the median is close to the average is a good sign, because it shows that offers are spread across most of the batch and not just concentrated at the top. Recruiters that visit the campus include Amazon, Microsoft, L&T, Sprinklr, HDFC Bank, Cognizant, TCS, and C-DOT, which covers software, core engineering, banking, and telecom. Computer Science and related branches tend to see the strongest packages, but students from core branches also find roles in infrastructure, manufacturing, and public sector organisations. Package numbers differ across years and branches, so students should read the placement year along with the figures.
