8 Common MBBS Counselling Mistakes
We see these every cycle. Every one of these is avoidable.
Not registering for state counselling while waiting for MCC
MCC (15% AIQ) and state counselling (85% of govt seats) run simultaneously. Many students only focus on MCC. Missing the state registration window means losing 85% of available government seats permanently.
Freezing too early in Round 1
Unless you got your absolute first-preference college, choose Float in Round 1. Float keeps your current allotment while letting you try for better in Round 2. Freezing unnecessarily closes off a better potential seat.
Wrong choice filling order — top college not at position 1
MCC allots from your most preferred choice downward. If your dream college isn't at position 1 in your list, you will not get it even if your rank is sufficient.
Filling only 5–10 choices instead of 50–80
You can fill up to 100 choices. Empty slots are wasted opportunities. At AIR 20K, there may be 40–50 reachable colleges — you should list all of them in priority order.
Submitting an expired OBC Non-Creamy Layer certificate
OBC NCL certificates are valid only for the financial year they are issued. A 2024-25 certificate is invalid for 2026 counselling. Get a fresh one for FY 2025-26 before counselling begins.
Missing the security deposit deadline after allotment
If you accept a seat (Freeze or Float) and miss the security deposit confirmation deadline, your seat is automatically cancelled. Set phone alarms for every MCC deadline.
Ignoring states with lower cutoffs
Your home state might have high cutoffs. States like Jharkhand, Assam, Chhattisgarh, and Himachal Pradesh have significantly lower cutoffs for their state quota. Domicile holders in these states can access government MBBS at much lower ranks.
Not understanding the difference between AIQ and state quota seats
AIQ 15% seats: filled by MCC across all states. State 85% seats: filled by the state authority, only for domicile holders. Both need separate registration. Both must run in parallel.

Start MCC and state registration on the same day
The moment counselling opens, register on both mcc.nic.in and your state counselling portal simultaneously. Deadlines are tight and portals crash near closing time. Don't wait.
Build your college list before Round 1 opens — not during
Choice filling windows are short (3–5 days typically). Researching 50 colleges under time pressure leads to mistakes. Build your ordered list in advance and copy-paste it when the window opens.
Float in Round 1 unless you got your absolute #1 choice
Float is the mathematically safer choice in Round 1 for almost everyone. You keep your current seat. You try for better. You have nothing to lose. Freeze only when you would regret any upgrade.
Check your OBC/EWS certificate validity before counselling
Category certificates expire and have specific format requirements. Get these documents verified early — before the counselling window. Don't discover an expired certificate on the day of verification.
Research each college's bond obligations
Some government colleges (especially in UP and Bihar) have a Rs. 30L–50L bond for rural posting after MBBS. This is separate from fees. Know this before ranking a college in your list.
Save every payment receipt and confirmation screenshot
Security deposit receipts, MCC registration confirmations, and state allotment letters are required at college reporting. Save PDF versions, not just screenshots. Email them to yourself.
Mark every counselling deadline in your phone calendar with 24-hour advance alerts
MCC has 8–10 distinct deadlines across 4 rounds. State counselling adds more. Missing any single deadline can nullify your seat. Set alerts 24 hours and 2 hours before each.
Talk to current students at your shortlisted colleges before finalising
Search "[college name] student" on LinkedIn or Instagram. Ask about bond conditions, hostel quality, teaching quality, and placements. Brochure data and reality can diverge significantly.

What is Freeze, Float, and Slide?
Freeze = accept current allotment, no more upgradation. Float = accept current seat while trying for better in next round (safest). Slide = try for a different seat within the same college. Most students should Float in Round 1 unless they got their absolute #1 preference.
Do you support state counselling, or only MCC?
Both. MCC AIQ and state quota counselling run simultaneously. Both are included. Most government MBBS seats (85%) are filled through state quota — not running state counselling while focusing only on MCC is a common, costly mistake.
What if my NEET rank is low?
For lower ranks (AIR 40K+), strategy shifts to: private college management quota timing, deemed university Mop-up round, state quota in lower-cutoff states (Jharkhand, Assam, Chhattisgarh, HP), and MBBS abroad (Nepal, Russia).
