About Ayurveda (BAMS)

Ayurveda education in India centres on the 5.5-year BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) degree, including a one-year compulsory internship, regulated by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM). Admission is exclusively through NEET UG, with eligibility of 10+2 in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. India has over 280 NCISM-approved Ayurveda colleges, including the Institute of Medical Sciences (BHU) Varanasi, National Institute of Ayurveda Jaipur, Government Ayurveda College Thiruvananthapuram, and Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya Pune. Government college fees range from ₹10,000–₹60,000 per year, while private colleges charge ₹1–4 lakh per year. NEET scores of 300–420 can secure private seats, with government seats generally needing 420+. Postgraduate MD/MS Ayurveda specialisations include Kayachikitsa, Panchakarma, Shalya Tantra, and Prasuti Tantra. Graduates practise as Ayurvedic physicians in private clinics, government AYUSH hospitals and dispensaries, wellness resorts and spas, and the fast-growing Ayurvedic pharmaceutical industry (Patanjali, Himalaya, Dabur, Baidyanath), or pursue teaching and research roles.
