Dental education in India centres on the 5-year BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) degree, including a one-year rotatory internship, regulated by the Dental Council of India. Admission is exclusively through NEET UG, with eligibility of 10+2 in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. India has over 300 DCI-approved dental colleges, including the Faculty of Dental Sciences at KGMU Lucknow, Government Dental College Mumbai, Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences Delhi, and Manipal College of Dental Sciences. Government BDS fees range from ₹15,000–₹1 lakh per year, while private and deemed college fees range from ₹2–8 lakh per year; NEET scores of around 300–450 can secure private seats, with government seats generally needing 450+. Postgraduate MDS specialisations include Orthodontics, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Prosthodontics, Periodontics, Endodontics, Pedodontics, and Oral Pathology. Graduates practise as dental surgeons in private clinics and dental chains, hospitals, and government health services, or move into academics, public health, and the dental-products industry.
