Mechanical Engineering in India is offered as the 4-year B.Tech/B.E. degree and M.Tech specialisations in Thermal Engineering, Design Engineering, Manufacturing, Automotive Engineering, Robotics & Automation, and Mechatronics. B.Tech admission is through JEE Advanced (IITs), JEE Main (NITs, IIITs, GFTIs), and state CETs such as MHT CET and WBJEE; M.Tech admission uses GATE. Leading institutions include IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, NIT Trichy, and BITS Pilani. Annual tuition ranges from ₹60,000 at government institutes to ₹3–5 lakh at private universities. Graduates work as design engineers, production and manufacturing engineers, automotive engineers, HVAC engineers, and maintenance engineers with companies including Tata Motors, Mahindra, Bosch, Cummins, Siemens, L&T, and the automotive and energy sectors, and enter PSUs (BHEL, NTPC, IOCL, GAIL, ISRO, DRDO) through GATE. Many mechanical graduates also move into software, data, analytics, and management roles, with core packages of ₹3.5–14 LPA.
