About Optometry

Optometry education in India centres on the 4-year Bachelor of Optometry (B.Optom), including a one-year clinical internship, and the 2-year Master of Optometry (M.Optom), now regulated under the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP). Coursework covers ocular anatomy and physiology, optics, refraction, contact lenses, binocular vision, low vision, ocular diseases, and dispensing. Admission is through CUET, state paramedical entrance tests, and institute tests, with 10+2 in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Mathematics. Leading institutions include the Elite School of Optometry (Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai), L V Prasad Eye Institute, AIIMS Dr. R.P. Centre, Manipal College of Health Professions, and Amity. Annual fees range from ₹20,000 at government institutions to ₹1.5–3 lakh at private colleges. Optometrists work in eye hospitals, optical chains (Lenskart, Titan Eye+), contact-lens and ophthalmic companies, and private practice, with salaries of ₹3–8 LPA and good opportunities abroad.
