A career in surgery in India begins with the 5.5-year MBBS degree (admission via NEET UG), followed by a 3-year MS (Master of Surgery) or postgraduate diploma obtained through NEET PG, and optionally a 3-year MCh super-speciality obtained through NEET SS or INI SS. Core surgical branches include General Surgery, Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, and Obstetrics & Gynaecology, while super-specialities include Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Urology, Plastic Surgery, Surgical Gastroenterology, and Paediatric Surgery. Premier institutions include AIIMS New Delhi, PGIMER Chandigarh, CMC Vellore, JIPMER Puducherry, and Maulana Azad Medical College. Government MBBS fees range from ₹10,000–₹50,000 per year and private/deemed fees from ₹5–25 lakh per year; PG stipends for resident surgeons range from ₹60,000–₹90,000 per month. Practising surgeons work in government and corporate hospitals, medical colleges, and private practice, with specialist earnings rising substantially after MS and MCh.
