Veterinary education in India centres on the 5.5-year BVSc & AH (Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry) degree, including a six-month compulsory internship, regulated by the Veterinary Council of India (VCI). Admission is through NEET UG, with 15% of seats filled by ICAR through an all-India quota and the rest through state counselling. Eligibility is 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Premier institutions include the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) Bareilly, the College of Veterinary Science Tirupati, GADVASU Ludhiana, TANUVAS Chennai, and Bombay Veterinary College. Government college fees range from ₹15,000–₹60,000 per year, while private and deemed colleges charge ₹1.5–6 lakh per year. Graduates register as veterinarians and work in government animal-husbandry departments, dairy and poultry industries, pet clinics, wildlife and zoo services, pharmaceutical companies, and research, or pursue an MVSc for specialisation in surgery, medicine, pathology, or gynaecology.
