Humanities Courses, Colleges & Career Paths

Humanities programmes in India offer BA, BA (Hons), and MA degrees in History, Philosophy, English and comparative literature, Sociology, Political Science, Psychology, Economics, Anthropology, and Cultural and Development Studies. Admission to central universities is through CUET (UG and PG); autonomous and private colleges use Class 12 board merit or entrance tests. Premier institutions include Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University's constituent colleges (Lady Shri Ram, Hindu, Miranda House, St. Stephen's), Jadavpur University, the University of Hyderabad, TISS, and Ashoka University. Annual tuition ranges from ₹5,000–₹30,000 at government universities to ₹3–8 lakh at private liberal-arts universities. Humanities graduates build careers in civil services, academia and research, journalism and publishing, policy and think-tanks, law, education, the development sector, museums and heritage, and increasingly in UX research, content strategy, and social-impact consulting, where critical thinking, writing, and qualitative-research skills are valued.
